High School Programs & Alternative Schools

Avanti is Olympia’s premier alternative school, but there are several programs housed within all of Olympia’s high schools. From the OlyBears preschool program that pairs high schoolers studying early education with preschoolers to the International Baccalaureate program, there is an array of programs for virtually every type of student.

  • Alternative Education – The Alternative Education Department endeavors to provide students with the opportunity to develop their skills in a way that accommodates their individual needs. The underlying emphasis for this program is to prepare students for life after high school. This preparation can be for college, work, or other individually designed goals.
    • GRADES: 9-12.

  • AP (Advanced Placement) – The Advanced Placement (AP) program offers students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. It also gives them the opportunity to show they have mastered the advanced material by taking AP exams.
    • GRADES: 9-12.
    • TYPE: College Prep.

  • Avanti High School – We have a commitment to the process of learning within an interdisciplinary, project and mastery based educational environment. Avanti classes focus on depth over breadth and often include the integration of content areas.

  • AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) – The AVID class is a college preparatory elective that supports students in achieving their college dreams.  AVID is designed to be a four year program that helps students develop the skills they need to succeed in college, and supports students in taking challenging high school courses.
  • CiHS (College in the High School) – CiHS is a dual-credit program that allows students to simultaneously earn both high school credit and college credit while taking courses offered in high school.

  • CTE (Career & Technical Education) – CTE classes offer students hands-on experiences in many career areas, including Applied Arts & Technology, Business & Manufacturing, and Medicine.
    • GRADES: 9-12.
    • TYPE: Career Development.

  • Freedom Farmers – The mission of the Freedom Farm is to create a high school experience that utilizes place-based learning and social justice as frameworks for education, resulting in authentic, student-driven, and engaging learning experiences to help create informed, empowered, and passionate students who do relevant and important work in our community and world now and in the future.
    • GRADES: 9-12.
    • TYPE: Alternative.
    • LOCATION: Olympia High School.
  • hConnect (Homeschool Connect) – ORLA’s hConnect program is a partnership between educational staff and homeschooling families. Caregivers act as the primary educator in a homeschooling role, and ORLA provides educational opportunities for students.
  • Life Skills Program – The Life Skills program provides self-contained special education classrooms for students with profound disabilities.
    • GRADES: K-12
    • TYPE: Special Education.
    • LOCATION: McLane Elementary School, Olympia & Capital High Schools, Integrated into DLC at Jefferson Middle School.
  • International Baccalaureate – The International Baccalaureate program is a rigorous, college preparatory option intended to enhance the international perspective of students as well as to get them ready for college.
    • GRADES: 11-12.
    • TYPE: College Prep.
    • LOCATION: Capital High School.
  • OlyBears – Oly Bear Preschool is managed by the Olympia High School and Career/Technical Education teams. The Preschool was established in 1979 as a learning lab for the Olympia High School ECE program.
    • GRADES: 9-12.
    • TYPE: Career Development.
    • LOCATION: Olympia High School.
  • ORLA Online – The ORLA Online program is a flexible option for students and families seeking more choice over the time and location with which they participate in learning. This can include a full schedule of online courses or a mix of online and in-person learning.
  • Running Start – Running Start is a program designed for juniors and seniors who choose to enroll in Community College in order to earn college and high school credit simultaneously for courses completed.
