The petition reads:

Dear Olympia School District Leadership,

As one of your constituents, students, family, and staff in the Olympia School District, I am concerned about the board’s unwillingness to hold Superintendent Patrick Murphy accountable for the current budget recommendations. Cutting family liaisons that help our students feel seen, elementary art specialists that teach one of Olympia’s most valued curriculums, custodians that help keep our students’ learning space clean & safe, lunch staff that are necessary for the district’s goal of expanding menu options, and expanding class sizes that are already out of control at many neighborhood schools, is both short-sighted and overtly not student-centered.

Equity should be a top priority for OSD and we want families to have equal access to choice programs. These programs are important and often lack transportation options and support from the district. Every family deserves a chance to benefit from our programming, not just those with the extra time and resources. Our district is confusing and there has been a lack of vision for our future beyond closing schools and creating chaos and further deficits in morale and funding. Olympia deserves better, and we urge the board to listen to the collective directive in our budget survey. Our student-facing staff is the most valuable asset we have. These reactive decisions are the issue with our budget. Please refer to the actual budget parameters and reject this proposal in favor of one that would lead to a sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

Sincerely,
